Gaskets for Clean and Hygienic Environments
Pharmaceutical manufacturing and food processing both demand gasket materials that will not contaminate the product. Pure PTFE is one of the most commonly specified materials in these industries because it is chemically inert, non-toxic, and easy to clean. We stock PTFE sheet in various thicknesses and can cut flange gaskets to any standard or bespoke size.
For hygienic pipe connections, tri-clamp (or tri-clover) gaskets are the standard. We supply these in silicone, EPDM, and PTFE. Silicone is preferred for high-temperature sterilisation cycles (SIP), while EPDM is the better choice for CIP cleaning with caustic solutions. Both are available in FDA-compliant grades.
GORE GR sheet gaskets are widely used in pharmaceutical and chemical applications. The expanded PTFE construction provides an excellent seal at low bolt loads, and the material resists virtually all chemicals. We are stocked with GORE GR sheets and can cut gaskets to order. In chemical processing, the media often dictates the gasket material. Strong acids require PTFE or fluoropolymer gaskets. Caustic soda attacks most elastomers but EPDM holds up well. Solvents will destroy natural rubber but have little effect on Viton. We stock rubber sheeting in all these grades and can advise on the right material for your application if you let us know the chemical, temperature, and pressure involved.
For potable water systems, WRAS-approved materials are required. We stock WRAS-approved jointing sheets and rubber grades that meet these requirements. This is particularly relevant for water treatment plants and food factories in the Grimsby area, many of which we supply regularly.
Compression packing for pharmaceutical pumps needs to be FDA-compliant and resistant to the CIP and SIP chemicals used in cleaning cycles. We supply PTFE-based packing that meets these requirements.
Compliance and Traceability
FDA 21 CFR 177.1550 (PTFE) and 177.2600 (rubber) are the key regulations for gasket materials in contact with food or pharmaceutical products. We stock materials that meet these requirements and can supply FDA compliance certificates with each order.
WRAS approval is required for any gasket material in contact with potable water in the UK. EU Regulation 1935/2004 applies to food contact materials. Our suppliers test and certify their products against these standards, and we pass that documentation through to you. Full batch traceability is available on all materials we supply.
